Conventional -86°C ultra-low temperature freezers operate with a single two-stage cascade system. If the compressor fails, the internal temperature rises to uncritical values within a few hours, leading to potential sample loss. A dual cooling system counters this risk with two completely independent compressor circuits: if one fails, the second maintains the storage temperature permanently at -70°C to -80°C until the unit can be serviced.
Inverter-controlled (frequency-controlled) compressors adjust their speed continuously to the actual cooling load. When the storage temperature is stable and the door is closed, the compressor runs at reduced power; when the door is opened or new samples are loaded, it increases power as required. Compared to conventional on-off compressors, energy-intensive starting from a standstill is eliminated. Models in this category achieve power consumption levels from 5.9 kWh/day (428 l) to 9.1 kWh/day (958 l) at -75°C.
